This private residential project in Wimbledon, South West London, involved the construction of a new garden basement incorporating a below-ground swimming pool, structurally linked to the existing basement beneath the main house.
The site presented significant logistical challenges, with no vehicle access to the rear garden. Excavation was carried out using mini plant machinery, with spoil removed via a mechanical conveyor system. A carefully sequenced programme of mass concrete underpinning protected the existing foundations throughout the works, allowing excavation to proceed safely in close proximity to the occupied property.
In-situ reinforced concrete walls and columns were constructed to form a robust, watertight below-ground structure capable of housing the pool enclosure and connecting corridor. Temporary works, including propping and shoring, were designed and installed to maintain ground stability at each stage of the dig.
The completed basement extension adds substantial below-ground living space and a luxury amenity to a high-value residential property in one of London’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.
